OLD CARPET CARE

The texture of a carpet and the materials used for its manufacture are of great solidity; however, the sturdiness of a rug varies with its provenance.
Generally, the strongest examples are those with a cotton warp, with a double or triple weft thread, and a pile of medium height.
More delicate are the “all-wool” pieces, with a weft made up of a single thread, and a low concentration of knots. For these, it will be preferable to have recourse to a carpet underlay (the best ones being made of two superimposed layers of rubber and jute). Not only does such an underlay prevent wear and tear on the rug, but it also helps it adhere better to the floor.
It is also advisable to insert a piece of felt if you have to put a heavy piece of furniture on the carpet, and you will take care to change the direction of the carpet every two or three months, so as to allow the part of the velvet crushed by the furniture to straighten up.
For the daily cleaning of a carpet, it is best to use a straw broom in the direction of the pile; this is easily determined by passing your hand over the surface of the mat. Each week, the carpet will be beaten. The best cleaning is to vacuum the carpet three or four times on the underside of the carpet, until the dust is completely absorbed.
We then pass the device once, velvet side. On the other hand, the use of a swatter is not recommended because too violent blows risk breaking the warp and weft threads.

CARPET CARE DURING THE SUMMER

During the warm season, carpets are usually put away. It must then be entrusted to a specialized house, preferably the one where the carpet was purchased; this will be an opportunity to clean it and check its condition. The same house can also, if necessary, carry out some small repairs to prevent the carpet from being damaged over time, which would reduce its value.
If you cannot go to a specialist company, then you must spray the carpet with an anti-moth product, then roll it up in newspaper or plastic-coated fabric and store it in a dry place.

THE REPAIRS

For repairs, on the other hand, it is essential to contact specialists because a badly done repair could reduce the value of the part.
Some repairers manage, by dint of skill and patience, to perform real miracles. They can even, on occasion, put a rug back on the loom and reconnect a lost piece. The main thing is that the structure of the carpet, that is to say all the warp and weft threads, is in good condition. This can easily be checked by folding the carpet, the pile inside, and forcing as if to tear the fold. If crackling is heard, the wires are rotten.
